Special Occasion Dresses: Petite, Woman’s and Plus Sizes Explained

Special Occasion Dresses NYCIn a previous Blake and Company special occasion dress blog entry, the difference between junior size special occasion dresses and missy (misses) size special occasion dresses was explained.  The focus of this special occasion blog entry is the petite special occasion dress size, petite plus, explain the meaning of “woman’s size” and plus size special occasion dress size.

As New York City’s premier representative of Mother of the Bride and special occasion dress collections, Blake and Company carries a large selection of mother of the bride dresses and special occasion dresses in a variety of sizes.

Remember that when it comes to special occasion dresses – fit is everything.  It is important to select a special occasion dress size that is right for you, based first on the body shape that the clothes are designed to fit.

Petite Special Occasion Dresses
Petite special occasion dresses are cut for shorter body.  Women between 5ft to 5ft 4in are good candidates for the petite special occasion dress size.  To clarify, petite doesn’t mean thin.  The petite size special occasion dress only refers to height.  Petite size special occasion dresses can be junior cut in sizes from 1P to 13P or in misses sizes from 2P to 14P.  Special occasion dresses and mother of the bride dresses can also come in Petite plus, which is 16P to 26P.  Petite plus size special occasion dresses are for women who are both short and full figured.

Women’s Size Special Occasion Dresses
The term “women’s size” refers to a sizing method of the past.  Most clothing is sold in misses sizes.  However, if the size tag of a special occasion dress has a W, then it is a true “woman’s size”.  Women’s sizes are meant for more mature women and are often cut with more room to move.  Consequently, these styles tend to be mature, do not fit as closely to the body and are generally not as flattering.   Today’s over 50 women are generally still fashionable and want to wear more flattering special occasion dresses and mother of the bride dresses.  As a result, the true woman’s size and style ranges are becoming less favorable.

Plus Size Special Occasion Dresses
Plus size special occasion dresses and plus size mother of the bride dresses are cut for a full figured woman with a larger than D-cup bust size.   Plus size special occasion dresses cover dresses from sizes 16 to 28 or 16W to 28W.  Plus sizes are sized as 1X-5X.  The fundamental difference between plus size special occasion dresses and misses size is the extra room for bust sizes and armholes.  In addition, the hip area is wider and more accommodating.

On a final note, it is important to remember that sizes vary between special occasion dress designers.  The best advice is to ignore the dress size numbers and try your best to get the best fit.

Is Jessica Simpson Planning a Secret Christmas Wedding?

Special occasion dresses and mother of the bride dresses on Christmas?  Christmas Day isn’t really a popular wedding day – but rumors were circulating that Jessica Simpson was going to marry fiancée, Eric Johnson on Christmas Day.

Mother of the Bride Dress

Jessica Simpson with Mom Debbie Simpson.

Whether or not the rumors are true, it will be interesting to see what the bride decides to wear.  The bride wore a Vera Wang dress for her first wedding to Nick Lachey but says she wants to keep it simple this time around.

When it comes to special occasion dress designs, Simpson may select a vintage lace gown, or she may go with something to show off her hourglass shape.  Based on her taste, Simpson has gone for pastel shades in the past when seen in special occasion dresses.  Maybe she’ll choose something pastel for her bridesmaids and mother of the bride dresses.

Perhaps a pale grey would suit Simpson’s style and she may go in that direction when helping her mom choose the mother of the bride dress.

When sister Ashlee Simpson wed rocker Pete Wentz, the mother of the bride dress was black as were the bridesmaid special occasion dresses.  It seems that Jessica would want to do something original, so my prediction is that a black mother of the bride dress is out of the question.

Regardless of what Jessica Simpson’s mom wears, the wedding is sure to be a fashionable event with plenty of the latest special occasion dresses on display.

Honeysuckle 18-2120

honeysuckle 18-2120It’s official!  As reported in a previous Blake and Company wholesale special occasion dress blog, the color gods have spoken!  We broke the news here on December 3rd, 2010 in our special occasion dress blog: The color of the year is Honeysuckle!  This announcement came by way of the Pantone Color Institute.  It is no joke – the Pantone Color Institute has arguably the largest influence in selecting color trends for fashion.  You can be sure that the mother of the bride dress designers and special occasion gown designers are already at work to be the first to release their honeysuckle lines.

To people in the know, it’s no surprise that honeysuckle is the 2011 color of the year because at New York City’s Fashion Week the reddish-pink honeysuckle made its way up and down the catwalk several times as models strutted their stuff in honeysuckle special occasion dresses.

Pantone Color Institute is a good place for special occasion dress designers and mother of the bride wholesalers to go check out what colors are expected to be big in the upcoming season.  According to Pantone’s Leatrice Eiseman, the honeysuckle color is associated with energy and the essence of hope.  The color is meant to not only inspire special occasion dresses, but the fashion world and the public in general.

It’s not only special occasion dresses that will be produced in honeysuckle, but you should also be on the lookout for honeysuckle scarves and accessories to hit the shelves in 2011.  And don’t think that Honeysuckle will only last through the spring… it will surely last past spring and into summer.  Look for honeysuckle to be paired with white for an alternative summery look.  Honeysuckle and earth tones will take us into fall 2011 and then by winter we’ll be ready for Pantone to let us in on the color for 2012.  Here’s a tip for all you special occasion dress industry people – pay close attention to New York City’s Fashion Week and see which color makes the grandest appearance – it may provide a clue as to what the next color of the year will be.

Small Business Saturday at Blake and Company NYC Special Occasion Dress Showroom

Wholesale Special Occasion DressesBlack Friday has come and gone… and so has Cyber Monday.  But another day also has come to pass – Small Business Saturday.  Small Business Saturday is the day after Black Friday and it is aimed at giving a boost to small businesses.  What do you mean you haven’t heard of Small Business Saturday?  Don’t worry – 2010 is the first Small Business Saturday ever!

Black Friday is really a way for big-box retailers to rack up the dollars with consumers.  Online sellers have Cyber Monday – but small businesses were left out of the loop.  Wholesale special occasion dress vendors need to get on board with promotions that may help them – and New York City is the first city in the country to endorse Small Business Saturday.  Hopefully, it will continue to grow in 2011.

New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg and American Express Chief Executive Kenneth Chenault launched Small Business Saturday as a way to get consumers to remember to support locally owned and independent businesses.

Small businesses like Blake and Company and many other special occasion dress and mother of the bride dress wholesalers.  Some economic strategists look to small businesses as a barometer of the larger economy.  Small businesses can use a boost and that is the thought behind Small Business Saturday.

This year American Express gave $100 worth of Facebook advertising to 10,000 business owners who signed up for the Small Business Saturday program.  Also, Amex gave $25 statement credits to 100,000 card members who registered their Amex cards and used them at a small business on Saturday, Nov. 27th 2010.

So, even though Small Business Saturday has come and gone doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t support small businesses all year round.

If you are looking for a small business to start with, why not give Blake and Company a shot.  Blake and Company’s New York Wholesale Dress showroom has plenty of great deals on beautiful wholesale dresses!  Come and see our mother of the bride and mother of the groom dress collections for yourself!

As Predicted in Blake and Company Mother of the Bride and Special Occasion Dress Blog: Wedding of the Century is Officially On!

Blake and Company Mother of the Bride and Special Occasion Dress blog readers – you read it here first on November 9th, 2010 in our blog entry about the wedding of the century.  Now it is official!  Kate Middleton and Prince William are finally engaged!  Special occasion dress designers around the globe are vying to see who will land the job of creating the wedding dress of the century.  Meanwhile, it would be wise for some savvy special occasion dress designer to focus on designing the mother of the bride dress instead.  Hey – why stop there?  Why not try the mother of the groom dress or pick from hundreds of special occasion dresses that the royal family and friends will be wearing.

Kate Middleton DressIt seems that the bride, Kate Middleton is already leaning towards having something created by London based Brazilian Designer Daniella Helayel.  With the bride’s fashion sense being seen as classic and traditional, special occasion dress designers can use that information to start planning the mother of the bride dress styles that may complement a traditional wedding dress.

Middleton’s style seems to be predictable, but as the wedding day draws closer, she may opt for something more opulent to match the billing of the wedding of the century.  Special occasion dress designers should watch this wedding very carefully as it may spark a whole new style of wedding dress, mother of the bride dress and special occasion dress.
